Making Illegal Street Racing A Felony

fast cars street racing crash Racing fast cars on the street may just be a natural selection process.

I was surprised to recently learn that apparently, in California getting caught street racing is only a misdemeanor (i.e., there’s generally only a fine associated with it). However, as the phenomenon of street racing (and the injuries and deaths because of it) continues unabated, new legislation is being proposed that would reclassify street racing as a felony:

Hey guys all im hearing seems to be correct. But I am doing a report on how streetracing shoudl somehow be legalized, so that we can all still do it, but without harming other innocent people. There has to be some way.....it just has to be agreeable with everyone. Ive got a 99 teg gsr and i know what its like to be tempted to race every time you come to a light with some dumba** hockeypuck who wants to race. SO, I would appreciate suggestions, and/or stories about it

THANKS!!

my god. it's a sad state of affairs when a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old are killed on their way to the doctor and all most of these posts can only rail about how illegal street racing doesn't kill anybody. i wonder what you'd write if they'd been YOUR relatives. wow, i guess that's what it will take, huh? sad indeed.

Obviously, this is a heated topic, and the issue faces tougher legislation and tighter restrictions. Racing will always exist, but the manner in which we race can be adapted to safer methods. For example, http://www.scarconcepts.org provides a track alternative to illegal street racing. This doesn't mean that people are being herded into existing race tracks. This organization will bring the track to the racers. With the cooperation of local authorities, scarconcepts.org will set up a track in the streets - making for a safer street racing experience!

"Many of you are super young and irresponsible. You feel you have all the answers and love to call the people who are out there to protect you names. Street racing kills every day.".......Ok um i do NOT agree with you im 19 and i own a supra with 500 hp and i street race every weekend and ive never seen anybody get killed over street racing. you get the facts on people getting killed everyday because of street racing and you show them to me.. The you can get some proof on people getting killed because of drunks and you look at the difference. ive seen more people get killed because of drunk driving than street racing. Yeah there are people that do get killed street racing but that is only because they have no sense and drive over the abilities. SO go ahead and make a felony that doesn't mean that your going to stop it theres motor heads just like me that will keep doing it everytime somebody adds a performance part to their car their going to try it out and where? Yes their going to do it on the street. so i think i made my point. Street racing for life....

Many of you are super young and irresponsible. You feel you have all the answers and love to call the people who are out there to protect you names. Street racing kills every day. It's not fair that my mother who was only 50 was killed by someone heading towards her in her lane. They now have to live with that for the rest of their lives. Instead of making fun of the authorities why don't to petition for safe places for you to race where you aren't running over 50 year old nurses on their way into work who are waiting to patch you up or save you when you crash. You always say it won't be you, but the next time you get in that car and drive up the wrong side of the road you put more than your life in jeopardy. That's what's not fair. Tell that to her husband, seven grandchildren and four children. Life is never fair and it comes with no promises. The law is there to protect you. Don't be foolish. By the way clean up your language, it's and indicator of someone who is going nowhere and of limited intelligence.

I with all yall!!! Get all the old people off the roads, they are the ones killing. My best friends sister got killed by an elderly man who had a stroke or somethin while he was driving. Im pretty sure us young folk are 10times better drivers then the old fuckers.

i think street racing should be illegal but not up to the point where its a fleany.I agree with the other articles i've read drunk driving and elderly driving cause more accident then we do. I also think they should openn more tracks. And if youre racing where no one can get hurt like in the middle of no where then i think that shouldn't be a crime.

I just wanna say that i think the whole felony this is bullshit cuz i am serving my third suspension due to being hit by a drunk 16 year old kid and i also got a ticker for drifting out in the middle of nowhere and somebody called the cops and had me taken to court when it was none of their busines...i think all the old ass people on the road should get off of the road and i think that if you have a problem wit fast driving then move to iraq or something where u wont be driving at all... ps. I HATE COPS

hi i am doin a report on illeagal street racing and i was wondering if you can send me some pictures that been in a crash and some cars that do street race that are not damaged to my e-mail at fatswow@yahoo.com

Posted by: Justin at March 21, 2007 02:32 PM

We should be able to race if we want just b/c of the old people that complain about us doesnt mean any thing. And the felony thing is bs because gettin ur car impounded is enough but now pushing a felony by gettin caught.

Street racing in Texas is a felony. How often, even before street racing was a felony, did you hear of people dying from street racing. Very rarely. How often though do you hear of innocent people dying from drunk drivers. The only reason street racing is a felony and drunk driving is'nt is because of money. Alcohol brings in tons and tons of money and street racing doesnt. Its a bunch of bull, street racing should not be a felony.

i say... how you go blame it on a game son!!!that's bogus on the real note.

Lets Ride!

fast cars doesn't mean injury or death. it's a lack of paying attention to what you are doing and even then it's a 50/50. not all illegal street racing is going to hurt someone. and anyone that disagrees tough.-good point im sick of people always thinking that all street racing ends with death are crashes. its always possible if people wanna say that people shouldnt be allowed to do anything that is potentailly dangerous then they better sell their car cuz every day that could potentally dangerous. "if you say "wait till someon you know or love gets hurt in one of these races" - really good point i lost one of my best guy friend that races with me to a drunk driver that drove him head on into a telephone pole at roughly 102mph. i still miss him to this day but that just gives me more insentive to race because i know my buddy loved it as much as me. I named my ride after him. and i have never crashed. all these people saying we'll regret it sooner or later need to get a better habit than naggin racers for the dangers!

I agree with you... Nice article

I think that most of our great legislature needs to remove their heads from their asses and look at real problems with the issue. first off their aren't anough tracks for everyone to go to. second when we can go to a track we only get a few runs and it's normally against people with extremely modifies engines. who wants that. if I'm going to race like I do sometimes I want it to be somewhat close. I don't go challenging 800hp mustangs on the road and I don't want to do it on the track. I recently went to a race and was apalled at the fact that street modifieds were placed against pro modified. maybe when they start opening more events for us sport sompact fans and remove all the big muscle from some of the tracks or giving us our own then it might stop. fast cars doesn't mean injury or death. it's a lack of paying attention to what you are doing and even then it's a 50/50. not all illegal street racing is going to hurt someone. and anyone that disagrees tough. if you say "wait till someon you know or love gets hurt in one of these races" guess what been there. I watched my best friend crash at 90mph and it was someone elses fault. the fact is people that get hurt are in the wrong place at the wrong time. and just so people know where I stand on this all. racing is illegal, and I agree with that but not to the extreme as repeat offender drunks (i have been hit by them many times). a fine and court costs should be involved but a felony is a little extreme. Stop worrying about street racing and try and get the elderly off the street. they cause more accidents then we do. I recently heard a story of a guy that was 90 and still driving running over his wife killing her because he couldn't see her walking in front of his car. and you people say street racers are dangerous ha. get a clue!
