Hard to know which fast car race is the most exciting.
Which championship fight is more exciting - Alonso vs Schumacher in Formula 1, Force vs Capps in NHRA's Funny Car or The Chase for the Nextel Cup Championship in NASCAR.

Richard Petty Got It Right
Fast car driver Michael Schumacher lost his pole position in the Monaco Grand Prix.
I will have to take Petty's side on this one. Besides, Indy Car racing and Formula One isn't really racing, if you win the pole you win the race, unless you break down. Dont' believe me take a look a look at Formula One racing today.

No, not on the runway, happily. The Dubai-based Emirates has just announced another sports sponsorship deal. Beginning with this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix, the distinctive “Fly Emirates” logo – in evidence at an increasing number of top global sporting events - will appear on the Team McLaren Formula One cars at motor races across the world, as well as on the uniform of drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya.

My 10 Car Garage
From a list of cars for a future 10 fast car garage, number 5, the Mercedes McLaren SLR.
Mercedes McLaren SLR, what can I say about it? It is Mercedes showcase car, just look at the designs, that slick jacknife profile, those shark-like side gills, that formula one front end and those beautiful wheels. It's the ultimate gearhead's toy. The SLR is not just all show and no go, underneath is the superb McLaren tuned engine that sounds like a Spitfire charging down the road. In a word, breathtaking.

Back to the North
A Formula One race beats St. Anthony's mounted tongue anyday.
In the Basilica di San Antonio, I saw the strangest relics: St. Anthony’s tongue mounted on a gilded stand, his larynx in another, and the usual moth-eaten saintly-robe-and-slippers display. The university’s botanical garden - the oldest in the world, founded in 1545 - housed “Goethe’s Palm”, the palm that inspired the German writer’s ideas for his Metamorphosis. I spent the weekend back in Monza, along with thousands of race car fans there to see Italy’s Formula One race. Marco saw me off to the train station for the last time to meet George in Munich.

Formula One Pre-Season Review
Click through for more good F1 fast car analysis.
It was with a slightly nervous disposition that I went into this years championship, after all Schumacher had dashed all my hopes in '04 by literally going through the competition as smoothly as a knife through butter. If that was not bad enough Ferrari had put their poor pre-season testing effort behind them and the modified F2004M started the season after some record breaking laps around Mugello.

Le Tour de France
Corporate sponsorship seems to take over all successful sports eventually.
Anyway, back to the Tour de France. The first thing I’ve noticed is that only teams compete, no individual riders. Much worse, out of the the twenty-one teams of nine riders, twenty-one of the teams are sponsored by corporations. That’s every one of them!
I realize Formula One is getting that way, but motorsport at least has privateers. Evidently there’s none of that in bike racing, which I have to say pretty much turns my stomach. The only reason a company would sponsor a bike team is for advertising exposure and I’d prefer it if some people who loved the sport itself could have some teams.

More on Michelin
A German post on the Michelin fast car debacle in Indianapolis.
An adamant Mosley apparently did not consider the wider ramifications for formula one in front of 130,000 spectators and a television audience of millions. For him this was “a black-and-white issue”. The chicane undermined the spirit of sporting competition and would have been unfair to the Bridgestone cars - even if Jordan and Minardi supported the Michelin teams. Mosley argues that “I had to apply the rules fairly. In sport you can’t allow the majority to dictate.”

MotoGP and F1
Good post on the trade-offs between popularity and controversy in the fast car world and the motorcycle world.
Perhaps this is one of the “gotchas” which await the FIM in its quest to match the popularity of F1. As is often the case, the grass isn’t always greener and the complexities of balancing cost, safety and participation may yet create the same PR controversy for MotoGP that has just exploded in the Formula One world.

Details On The Michelin Request
Great details on the reasons for Michelin's fast car request at Indianapolis.
The main culprit was turn 13 at Indianapolis considered to be the only real banked turn in Formula One racing. With an angle of up to nine degrees, it demands a left-right compromise on suspension set-up. The left tyres take the heaviest strain, particularly their shoulders, with tyre temperature increasing in this area as a result. If this temperature is too high for too long, wear rates rise dramatically and can lead to failure. Michelin's request to allow tyre changes for safety reasons without penalising the teams was denied, as were the teams' requests to add a chicane to turn 13; all ruled as being against regulations. No surprises in the results as Schumi won facing no real competetion. His disappointment at the win was however clearly seen at the podium, with Tiago Monteiro being the only one really celebrating the hollow victory.

Formula One Failures
Good write-up on fast car failures in F1 racing:
Click through for more. The F1 race today in Indianapolis, the US Grand Prix, was a complete failure - on many levels.
Michelin failed to make a tire that is capabale of racing more than 10 laps without putting the driver in danger.
The FIA failed to figure out some sort of resolution to the problem.
The teams failed to push Michelin to give them another option.

Yes, Barrichello had to be mad about this.
Well the Formula race at Indianapolis yesterday was interesting. Although IMHO I don’t think that you can entirely blame Michelin for it as they were concerned for the safety of the drivers. I know that if I was a race driver in an F1 car I would be concerned if my tyre company said there was a fault with the tyre and it wasn’t safe to race then I wouldn’t race. I think the blame lies with the FIA for not building that chicane allowing the rest of the teams to race. If that had’ve been built then the race would have been more interesting and all the fans at Indianapolis wouldn’t have been so dissappointed. Still the only bit of excitment during the 6 car race was the fact that Ferrari’s nearly took each other out. Bet Barrichello was fuming.

Why Can't Karamjit Singh Secure Sponsorship?
Karamjit Singh has an exceptional fast car record:
Together with his co-driver Allen Oh, Karamjit had won the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) last year, as well as in 2001 and 2002. Because of him, Proton had also snagged the Manufacturer’s title in 2002 and 2004. Karamjit also took the Group N (Production car) titles in 1997, 2000 and 2001. (Source)
Isn’t this a proven track record for success? How come he is unable to get sponsorship from anyone?

Danica Patrick And The IRL
Danica Patrick may be gracing fast cars for a while:
There is an interesting article by Terry Blount of the Dallas Morning News discussing future options that may be available to Danica Patrick in NASCAR or Formula One were she ever to decide to go that route. Though, if Danica is successful in the Indy Racing League and the IRL continues to grow in popularity as a result, the issue of money may become mute as the IRL will enjoy an increase in sponsorship money and television revenues in the same way that the PGA did with Tiger. In addition, Danica’s independent endorsement contracts outside of the sport would likely well exceed her earnings from racing. The article is well worth a read for IRL, NASCAR, and Formula One fans (free login required at Mercury News website).

Electric fast cars, anyone?
They are doing some impressive things with electric motors these days:
“Size for size, we can provide 400% more torque than any type of motor currently available,” says managing director John Bryant. He is now hoping to team up with a sports car manufacturer, such as Lotus or TVR. Theoretically an electric racing car driven by four of the motors - one for each wheel - could hold its own in Formula One.

Alonso Wins Again
What a year for fast car driver Fernando Alonso.
Renault's Fernando Alonso won the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring after long-time leader Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren crashed on the last lap.
Raikkonen's car was crippled in the closing laps with a badly damaged right front tyre, which was sending strong vibrations through the suspension.
Raikkonen was just ahead of Alonso at the start of the last lap, only for the suspension to fail at the first corner.

They beat an all-star field that included F1’s Juan Pablo Montoya, retired two-time CART champion Gil de Ferran and current IRL star Helio Castroneves. More than 70 teams competed in the event, which began Saturday night and finished Sunday.

Kangaroo Court
Good points about the 2-race suspension of fast car team BAR Honda.
Ok, neither side of this dispute has been especially forthcoming about the precise details of this infringement. BAR claims that the regulations did not require them to drain this second tank; the FIA is claiming that because they were not open and transparent about the whole thing it is proof that they knew they were in violation of one rule or another. The fact of the matter is that the FIA regulations are as clear as mud, and the tradition of having local stewards judge the car’s fitness to said regulations leads to these misinterpretations.

This is a no-brainer considering Renault's fast car performances so far this year.
Renault extended Flavio Briatore’s contract as boss of their Formula One team to the end of 2006.

No Fast Solution for Ferrari
It may be some time before Ferrari recovers from its embarrasing fast car season.
There is no ‘magic’ solution to a not-fast-enough Formula One package. That’s the warning of Ross Brawn, who said at Imola that Ferrari and Bridgestone are likely to struggle a little longer.

Canadian F1 Star Jacques Villeneuve in the Hot Seat
The latest on the Jacques Villeneuve story:
Why the skepticism about a driver who has obviously been a force to be reckoned with in his past and therefore could potentially be dangerous on the grid on any race day? Simple, Jacques hasn’t delivered. The fact that his boss, Peter Sauber, has been willing, however late to JV’s defense, to admit the problems the French Canadian faces have had more to do with a poorly sorted car, known as the C24 in Sauber code, and the fact that JV has had little opportunity to test than with any lack of talent on his part, has done little to thwart the critics, hot after the 1997 champion for blood.
Commenting on the subject of replacement drivers, Sauber jokingly told Autosport magazine, “In Malaysia we were married to Anthony Davidson, before Bahrain apparently Klien or Liuzzi would replace Jacques very soon. But there was no contact whatsoever with any of these drivers. And the reason for that is simple: I feel no urge for a driver change.”

More Speculation on Villeneuve
As mentioned here in Fast Cars earlier, there are rumors that Jacques Villeneuve may move over to NASCAR racing.
The 1982 San Marino Grand Prix was the last Formula One race for Gilles Villeneuve, who was killed in a practice crash prior to the Belgian Grand Prix.
The 2005 edition of the race may just be the last for his son, Jacques Villeneuve, who is currently struggling through a difficult year with the Sauber team.
Stories have percolated over the last several weeks about the future of the 1997 F1 champion with the Swiss-based team. While the team has acknowledged there are problems with the C24 chassis, Villeneuve has been off the pace when compared to teammate Felipe Massa. The team’s recent decision to replace the Canadian after just one day of inconclusive testing in Spain further fuelled the speculation surrounding his future.

This Just In ...
I think this rule change benefits fast car driver Christian Klien and Red Bull:
Following a unanimous request from the teams and further to a fax vote of the remaining Formula One Commission members, together with a fax vote of the World Motor Sport Council, the requirement under Article 58b of the 2005 Formula One Sporting Regulations that the third (Friday) driver should not have competed in more than six World Championship Events during the previous two World Championships has been deleted.

Formula One Racing, Brought To You By ...
It probably wasn't very hard to put fast cars and tobacco together in the marketing department.
That's actually not as true as it used to be, but there's no doubt that NASCAR owes much of it's meteoric rise in the 80s and 90s to RJ Reynolds cleverly skirting increasingly restrictive advertising rules by pouring huge piles of cash at the series and take over advertising to such a great etent that they effectively became a surrogate promoter. Formula One has been solidly attatched to the tobacco pipeline though they've been slowly but surely coming ungluued as well (though not before they dumped the historic Spa circuit a couple of years...

How Many Red Bulls Does It Take
From fast cars to penalty shots:
The billionaire creator of Red Bull energy drink has decided that competing in Formula One racing and sponsoring a variety of extreme sports teams isn't quite enough exposure in the jock market.
Dietrich Mateschitz, who swooped in to buy Jaguar's Formula One team in November, now has purchased struggling Austrian soccer club SV Salzburg -- and set some lofty goals.

From NASCAR To Formula One
If you've got nothing better to do, here's a little Formula One fast car fun ... online.
Since I've already given a shout-out to NASCAR today, it's only fair that I give F1 fans equal time. And, since I'll be working outside most of the day, I'll do it in the form of a time-waster for those of you who opt to stay indoors today. You don't actually have to be a Formula One fan to enjoy this one, either, but I do recommend you check out the "how to play" section and take advantage of the practice option until you get the hang of it.
I'll be back when the lawn's mowed and the mulch is down....

Looks Like Change Ahead for F1 Racing
Most teams skipped the meeting of the Formula One governing board:
The possibility that some Formula One teams may break off and form their own racing tour is increasing. Nine Formula One teams and five carmakers decided today to boycott a meeting next week with auto racing's world governing body.
FIA president Max Mosley called the meeting to discuss regulations for the 2008 season. That's the year the breakaway group might start its own tour.

Formula One Changes?
The F1 teams seem to have a different idea of how the fast car circuit will work:
The nine Formula One teams still unsigned to an extension of the current Concorde Agreement have announced that they will not be attending a planned meeting with FIA president Max Mosley in order to concentrate of formulating plans for a proposed breakaway series.
The nine teams - including every squad except Ferrari, which has already signed up to Bernie Ecclestone's vision of the future - and the five remaining manufacturers met in London to advance the ideas first published in February's 'Governing Principles for Grand Prix Motor Racing Post 2007'.
Now under the chairmanship of BMW Burkhard Goetschel, the carmakers continue to plan their own series from 2008, when the current Concorde Agreement ceases, and, to that end, have agreed to boycott the offered meeting with the FIA, scheduled for Paris on 15 April. The gathering had been intended as a forum to discuss technical regulations for 2008 and beyond.

My Flying Car
This is a pretty funny image, even in the physics aren't quite right. But on the other hand, bees can't fly either, according to physics.
While it wasn't exactly what I had envisioned when I was complaining, "It's 2005! Where's my flying car?", I remember reading that one of the Formula One companies had tested its latest F1 race car, the SR8, and found that it generates more downforce than its weight. Therefore, hypothetically (so far) turning it over and driving upside down will generate more lift that its weight and it will fly.

Villeneuve Out?
Will fast car champ Jacques Villeneuve survive the season?
After another disappointing race with Sauber in Bahrain last weekend, Canadian driver Jacques Villeneuve may only have one grand prix left to prove he still has what it takes to stick around in Formula One. With a poor showing in the first three races of the season, media speculation about the 1997 world champion's possible departure continues to gain momentum.

The Family Ferrari
A great family fast car story.
Formula One is one of my burning passions (well, I should say Ferrari!) and, the strange bond that is created by the driver with his machinery has always intrigued me.
After watching Formula One for so many years, my family is savyer than me, including my 4-year old son, Nino.
Nino is such a crazy Ferrari Fan that he cries wholehartedly if the scarlet car (well… Schumacher) does not win. I will be posting his pictures: since his early days in his mother’s womb when he rolled and kicked when we were watching Formula One. I really wonder what will he do if he has the opportunity to be in the Ferrari boxes (Montezemolo, if you ca read this… a pass to access Monza’s pitlane would be the greatest gift for your true-red fan)

Alonso Takes Bahrain Grand Prix
Alonso and Renault dominate fast car Formula One racing this year.
World Championship leader Fernando Alonso set a sizzling pace in the roasting desert heat yesterday to claim the fastest time in first qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
In temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius the Spaniard, who won the last race in Malaysia, set a time of 1:29.848 to finish 0.145 ahead of closest challenger Jarno Trulli of Toyota.
The pair have dominated qualifying in the first few races and even with world champions Ferrari bringing a new F2005 machine here this weekend they dominated again as the only two drivers inside the 1:29 barrier.

India's Up and Coming F1 Driver
India is abuzz about fast car native son Narain Karthikeyan.
Millions of Indian racing fans across the globe are pinning their hopes on the first Indian driver to have made it into Formula One racing. He is none other than Narain Karthikeyan who is in Bahrain for the third Grand Prix of the season that will be held today.
The Indian idol enjoys a huge fan base here in Bahrain too with several people attending the event here just to get a glimpse of their F1 hero. Making his debut in Formula One this year, he is enjoying every moment of it.
“Every race is like a lesson for me and I’m learning from the experiences,” Narain said while speaking to The Peninsula. Narain’s journey into F1 has not been a cakewalk, instead it has been a long, painstaking road with several hurdles along the way. But now that he’s here, he feels things will get easier for budding stars back in India.

Fast Car Driver Schumacher Retires

Preparations for Bahrain Grand Prix
Lots of fast cars on their way to Bahrain for next week's race.
As the preparations continue apace and teams start arriving for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, Bahrain International Circuit officials have confirmed that there has been a huge increase in demand for tickets as the race weekend approaches.
The recent increase in interest for race tickets has been heightened by the result of the races in Australia and Malaysia. “It’s a long time since Michael Schumacher and the Ferrari team haven’t figured in the opening races of the season,” said Circuit General manager Martin Whitaker.

American Speed Driving With Red Bull
American Scott Speed drove his fast car very well with the Red Bull Formula One team. Very well.
Scott Speed tested with the Red Bull Formula One team this week, posting the fastest times of all the drivers and increasing his chances of making his debut at the sport. The American finished faster than Williams' Nick Heidfeld and Antonio Pizzona, and Red Bull's Neel Jani in Thursday's testing. Only Red Bull and Williams chose to test in Barcelona this week. “The car is definitely the most powerful car I've ever driven,” Speed said. “This test all went smoothly with no dramas. My first impression was ‘wow!’ The braking power particularly impressed me.”

Formula One Off to Surprising Start
The Formula One season is not going according to Ferrari's plan.
A lot of surprises were in store for the Formula-1 fans as the first two races of the new season saw Ferrari failing to continue their dominating form of last couple of years. Critics may claim this is due to the fact that the Italian Sports Car manufacturer has yet not launched their 2005 model car until now. The point remains that there is a new force emerging in the Formula-1, which might upstage Michael Schumacher and Ferrari for the first time in many years.
Spearheading this new generation of drivers is the Renault’s 23-year-old prodigy Fernando Alonso. Alonso became the youngest-ever driver to grab pole position and then finishing the race in third for his first-ever podium way back in the year 2001. And since then he has been leading the Renault’s efforts on the Formula-1 circuit.

Fast Car Driver Preps in Maldives
Vita dura for fast car drivers.
Renault's Fernando Alonso has begun his special training in the Maldives to prepare for the Malaysia GP.
The Malaysia GP is famous for its humid weather which zaps drivers' stamina.
Maldives, the tropical island country has similar weather, is therefore an ideal place for pre-race training.
Aside from training, Alonso also found the place ideal for relaxing. The Formula One driver has been seen playing beach volleyball during training breaks.

More on Australian Grand Prix
Mark it down in the history books. Michael Schumacher not only failed to finish the Formula One season opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, but the multiple world champion’s Ferrari F2004M was never a contender. For once, Schumacher was a bit player, consigned to the back of the starting grid after a heavy rain shower nearly flooded the track in Saturday’s first qualifying session. On race day, contact with another car produced a spin, and he failed to finish the race.
While Schumacher was floundering, Giancarlo Fisichella decisively confirmed the Renault R25’s pre-season testing form by producing a dominant win at Albert Park, starting from the pole to beat Rubens Barrichello in the surviving Ferrari. Barrichello had climbed from 11th on the grid, finishing ahead of Fernando Alonso in the other Renault, from 13th at the start.

New Ferrari Formula One
Ferrari Formula One cars are the fast cars to beat. Here's the latest crop. Click link for more on the Ferrari team.
Ferrari have unveiled their new car with a warning that they intend to continue their Formula One domination.
It will be developed over the next two months and introduced at the Spanish GP on 8 May, with an updated version of last year's car to be used until then.
But there is a chance the F2005 could make its debut in Bahrain on 3 April if the old car is not competitive.
"No-one has fallen asleep over these past months," said Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo.
"After six world championships our target is to remain there.
"We know in sport you cannot always win and the time will come, but we want to stay at the top."

Ferrari Designer Passing on the Reigns?
Ferraris Formula One designer is giving more responsiblity to his likely successor.
The man responsible for designing Ferrari’s championship winning car the past six years says his fingerprints will not be as noticeable on the new car. Rory Byrne, who has two years remaining on his contract with Ferrari, says the team plans to start the 2005 season with an interim version of the new car, which is being managed by his likely successor, Aldo Costa.
“Costa has been my right arm for many years – I trust him very much,” Byrne tells the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. “When the time comes for my retirement, he will have to be in charge of the entire system.”
Byrne has been with Ferrari since leaving Benetton at the end of 1996. He, alongwith Jean Todt and Ross Brawn have been the braintrust at Maranello, guiding Ferrari back to the top of the Formula One ladder. Byrne says the F2005 will not be ready until the end of February and likely won’t make its debut until the F1 season is three to five races old.
